De Beurs Klassieke Schepen is een platform voor
mensen die een schip zoeken, materialen of onderhoudsmiddelen kopen of
informatie zoeken over nieuwe producten. Er zijn ook bezoekers die de
sfeer opzoeken die er hangt rondom klassieke schepen.
Vorig jaar was de Beurs Klassieke Schepen voor het eerst op de Gependam
in
Enkhuizen. Er stond één grote beurstent en langs de dam
lagen
alle schepen. Naar mate de bezoeker verder de dam op liep, werd het
steeds
wat stiller. Dit jaar gaat dat anders. De Gependam wordt dit jaar in zijn
geheel gebruikt om de 160 exposanten en 90 schepen een plek te geven. Er
komen twee hallen: een op het Beursplein en een op de Kaap. Daartussen
komen de grote en kleine schepen.
De beurs is zowel qua deelnemers als oppervlakte weer groter dan de
vorige
aflevering. Er zijn schepen van 2,40 tot 53 meter, de oudste is van 1873
en
de nieuwste is onlangs te water gelaten. Met de stoomsleepboot Rosalie,
een
waarlijk monument onder stoom, maakt u een tochtje door de haven. Het
kotterjacht Albatros ligt bij de ingang van het beursterrein als
voorbeeld
van een typische ‘Spirit of Tradition’; het thema van deze
beurs. Sommige schepen zijn hier voor het eerst te zien, maar er zijn ook
gebruikte en gerestaureerde schepen te koop.
Opening
beurs
De opening van de beurs is
op vrijdag 9 november om 11:00 uur. Mevrouw Nathalie Hesketh, lid van de
Maritime Policy Task Force van de Europese Commissie krijgt als eerste
uit
handen van de vicevoorzitter van EMH het verslag van het 6e European
Maritime Heritage Congres (Rotterdam, april 2007). Daarna verricht zij de
opening.
De EU Taskforce houdt zich bezig met het voortbestaan van de scheepvaart.
Daarbij gaat om het volgende probleem: te weinig Europeanen zien het
belang van de koopvaardij en te weinig jonge mensen kiezen voor deze
bedrijfstak. De EMH constateert tijdens haar congres dat tegelijkertijd
maritieme evenementen miljoenen bezoekers trekken en daarmee belangrijk
zijn voor de plaatselijke economie. Ook bevorderen zulke evenementen met
traditionele schepen het algemeen maritieme bewustzijn. Dat gebeurt
bijvoorbeeld door het bevorderen van vaardigheden, door sailtraining en
door educatie. De koopvaardij kan hier haar voordeel mee doen. Zeker als
deze bewustwording beter wordt aangestuurd met Europees beleid. EMH heeft
na haar congres aanbevelingen gedaan voor mogelijk beleid. Het
congresverslag dat mevrouw Hesketh uitgereikt krijgt, luistert naar de
titel ‘Sailing into Europe’s future’.
Vrachtvaart
Zoals ieder jaar zijn er op de beurs een aantal forumdiscussies. Op
zondag
gaat het bijvoorbeeld over het opnieuw zeilen met vracht. Traditionele
bedrijfsvaartuigen worden de laatste jaren behouden dankzij de nieuwe
functie die ze krijgen: het varen met gasten. De unieke Nederlandse
chartervloot is daar al jaren een prachtig voorbeeld van. Tijdens de
beurs
komt ook het oorspronkelijke aspect van ‘lading’ weer aan de
orde: echte vracht. Cees Dekker schipper van de dektjalk Bruinvisch laat
de goedbetalende zeilliefhebbers soms even aan de kade staan om het schip
weer met schelpen te vullen.Tijdens de Beurs Klassieke Schepen vertelt de
schipper over hoe het is om met ‘echte’ lading te varen en
hoe
het schip zich dan gedraagt. Daarnaast praten drie jonge mensen over hun
serieuze plannen om de zeilende vrachtvaart nieuw leven in te blazen. Zij
bouwen aan een houten schoenerbrik Tres Hombres onder de leus ‘Van
A
naar B zonder CO2!’. Om de discussie over zeilen te illustreren,
demonstreert de IJsselaak ‘Door Gunst Verkregen’ een
zelflosinstallatie waarmee vroeger zand werd gelost. Dit schip is weer
helemaal in de oude staat terug gebracht.
Portugezen op de
beurs
De rivier de Taag bij Lissabon vormt een waterrijk gebied waar al sinds
de
Phoeniciërs schepen varen. Lissabon heeft zich ontwikkeld dankzij de
scheepvaart in het achterland, zoals Amsterdam en Rotterdam konden
groeien
dankzij de ligging op een overgangsgebied tussen de oceanen en het
binnenwater.
Tijdens de Beurs Klassieke Schepen laat het museum Ecomuseo Municipal do
Seixal zien wat het in huis heeft. Seixal ligt aan de Taag schuin
tegenover Lissabon. Het museum toont de zoutexploitatie en het transport
daarvan. Ook geeft het een inkijkje in de belangrijke kurkindustrie van
deze plaats. Daarnaast houden ze er een getijdemolen in stand. In een
apart gebouw is een maritiem museum ondergebracht over de visserij en de
vrachtvaart. Het museum vaart met twee voormalige zoutvaarders met
bezoekers. Tijdens de Beurs zijn er twee films uit Portugal te zien. Een
boeiende documentaire over de gevolgen van de aanleg van de grote bruggen
over de Taag. Dat is te vergelijken met de gevolgen van de Afsluitdijk
voor de visserij in het Zuiderzeegebeid. Verder een unieke film over de
bouw van een Rabelo, een vrachtscheepje waarmee vroeger de port naar
Porto
werd gebracht.
Typisch van dit omvangrijke rivierlandschap zijn de vele rijk en fleurig
beschilderde schepen. Daarvan zijn er nu nog ongeveer 80 houten schepen
over. Maar mede door de inspanningen van het museum is er momenteel weer
veel belangstelling voor deze schepen. Er zijn zelfs een paar werven
overgebleven, evenals een zeilmakerij. De schilder Diogo Gomes laat
tijdens de beurs zien hoe deze boten worden beschilderd. Met een zwierige
penseelstreek maakt hij bloemmotieven, letters of hele taferelen
bijvoorbeeld ontleent aan het stierenvechten. De museummedewerkster
Elisabete Curtinhal geeft tijdens de beurs een lezing over dit typische
schilderswerk.
Bereikbaarheid van de Beurs in Enkhuizen
U kunt
gemakkelijk met de trein of bus bij het beursterrein komen. De ingang van
de beurs is direct achter het station. Komt u met de auto, dan wordt u
verwezen naar een gratis parkeermogelijkheid. Vanaf daar brengt een
veerboot u gratis en comfortabel naar het
beursterrein.

The Classic Boat Show is a meeting place for
people looking for a boat, for shipping materials, and maintenance
services, as well as the latest product information. Many visitors are
simply attracted by the atmosphere that goes with classic boats.
Last year was the first year for the Classic Boat Show to be held on the
Gependam in Enkhuizen. This year’s visitors access has been
improved. The venue will be held on the full length of the Gependam that
harbours 160 exhibitors and 90 boats. The boats will be moored in between
two exhibition halls, one on the Fairground and the other on the Cape. In
this way the indoor and outdoor events are better connected. The number
of
participants has increased, and so has the show area.
The size of the boats ranges between 2.4 and 53 metres; the oldest ship
dates back to 1873 and the latest was recently launched. The steam
tugboat Rosalie, a true steam powered monument, takes you for a
trip along the harbour. The Albatros, a classic cutter, is on
view at the entrance of the fair ground as a typical example of the
“Spirit of Tradition”, the theme of this year’s show.
Some of the boats are on view for the very first time, others are used
and
restored vessels on sale.
Opening
The opening ceremony takes place on Friday 9th November at 11:00 am. The
Vice Chair of the European Maritime Heritage will present a copy of the
Proceedings of the 6th EMH Congress (Rotterdam, April 2007) to Mrs
Nathalie Hesketh, member of the EC Maritime Policy Task Force. The Show
will be opened officially after the presentation.
The EC Taskforce’s mission is to protect and promote the shipping
industry. The importance of shipping is undervalued and young people are
reluctant to choose their profession in the industry. However, the EMH
observes that maritime events are immensely popular, attracting millions
of visitors, and that they contribute considerably to the local economy.
Maritime events including traditional vessels help to improve the general
interest in maritime affairs, for instance, by fostering specialist
skills, sail training, and education. This could be to the advantage of
the merchant navy, particularly if raising awareness for the industry is
directed by European policy for which the EHM has made recommendations.
”Sailing into Europe’s Future” is the title of the
Proceedings that will be presented to Mrs Hesketh.
Cargo Sailing
As usual there will be several discussion panels
during the Show. The discussion panel on cargo sailing is held on Sunday.
Traditional merchant vessels are being preserved in view of
their new purpose: tourism. The unique Dutch charter fleet has been a
wonderful example of its success for many years. But the Show will also
pay attention to the original charge of these vessels: cargo. Cees
Dekker,
skipper of the Frisian ‘dektjalk’ the Bruinvisch,
occasionally leaves his passengers on shore for a load of shells.
Skippers will tell us, during the show, what cargo sailing is like and
what navigation of cargo entails. Three young sailors will talk about
their serious plans to revive cargo sailing. They are building a wooden
schooner Tres Hombres with the slogan “sailing from A to B
without CO2!”. To illustrate this discussion the IJssel barge
Door Gunst Verkregen will demonstrate a self-unloading system
that was used to unload sand. This ship has been completely restored.
Portugugal at the Classic Boat
Show
The Tague, at Lisbon, is a rich estuary that has been a shipping centre
since the Phoenicians. Lisbon and its hinterland have developed on the
success of shipping and flourish, like Rotterdam and Amsterdam, because
of
the location between the ocean and the inland waterways.
At the Classic Boat Show the Portuguese Ecomuseu Municipal do Seixal will
present its treasures. Seixal is a town on the river Tague, just across
from Lisbon. Its museum has a special section on salt exploitation and
transport. It also shows items of the cork industry that is of local
importance. They also run an old tidal mill and the adjoining maritime
museum features the fishing industry and another building shows the cargo
trade. There are two former salt vessels that take visitors on a tour up
the Tague.
The Classic Boat Show will feature two films from Portugal. A fascinating
documentary about constructing the bridges across the Tague, an
intervention of the proportions of the effects of the Aflsuitdijk on
fishery in the Zuiderzee. Another film deals with the unique story of
building the Rabelo, a small freighter that used to take Port to Porto.
The rich and colourful boat decorations typical to this large estuary
will
be demonstrated. Only about 80 of the colourful boats have been preserved
and the museum has contributed significantly to a renewed interest in
these boats that has led to the preservation of a couple of
shipyards and a sailmaker’s. The painter, Diogo Gomes, will
demonstrate at the Classic Boat Show how these boats are decorated and
will demonstrate the typically elegant brushstrokes that shape flower
motives, characters and entire tableaux of bull-fighting and other
typically Portuguese scenes. Elisabete Curtinhal, who works for the
museum, will give a lecture on this art.

train or bus. The show’s entrance is just behind the railway
station.
If you arrive by car you will find directions along the route to the free
car park and ferry that will take you across to the
fairground. The show has an indoor and an
outdoor
exhibit area.
